How to Replace a Volvo Replacement Key Fob

Your Volvo key fob can do more than just unlock and lock your vehicle. It’s also an advanced antitheft device that makes use specialized technology to communicate with your car in order to prevent theft.

But what happens when the battery on your key fob goes out? Our team at Volvo Cars Mission Viejo has all the answers!

How to unlock your Vehicle

Modern electronic key fobs offer greater functionality and ease of use in comparison to traditional manual keys. Batteries will eventually get worn out and require replacement. If your Volvo keyfob only functions intermittently, your battery might be dying and you will need to replace it soon.

There are simple steps that you can follow to replace your Volvo key fob battery on your own. First, locate a clear work surface to perform the procedure. Then, lay out all of the tools you’ll need. Find the battery’s hatch, and then open it with a flathead, a coin, or a similar tool. Next, carefully pry out the battery by lifting the side closest to the hook of the key-ring. Be sure to use rubber gloves to avoid damaging the clips or electronic contact surfaces.

Place the new battery into the socket after the previous one is removed. Make sure that the positive side is facing up and that it is seated in all of the clips. Slide the cover downwards towards the key-ring portion until it is loose and falls off. Then, take off the cover to reveal the mechanical key blade that is hidden within. You can use it to unlock your car from the driver’s door if you have lost or broken the key fob.

How to Start Your Vehicle

Modern vehicles come with keyfobs that do more than just unlock and secure the doors. They also have useful functions such as summoning or auto-parking the vehicle. In fact, the new Volvo XC60 can even remotely start your engine using its key fob buttons. What exactly is it that it does?

First, find a clean, flat surface where you can lay out all the essential items for this project. Lay the fob on the work surface with the Volvo logo facing upwards. Then you will need a flathead screwdriver or coin, or a similar tool to switch the battery hatch from the open position. Avoid touching the electronic contact surfaces with your tools. This could cause the fob to stop working properly.

Once the hatch has been opened, place the battery in its socket. Make sure the positive (+ side) is facing upwards. After the clips are secured into place, remove the cover of the battery and then reassemble the fob.

By pressing the unlock button only one time the alarm will be removed and the driver’s doors will be unlocked. Pressing it again will unlock all doors as well as the tailgate. The unlock button can also be used to roll down the windows during hot days or to let fresh air in prior to getting behind the wheel. If you’d like to do more, the keyfob can be used to turn on the ERS that will begin the climate control system in your vehicle and warm or cool the vehicle according to the desired temperature levels when the vehicle is in a parking.

How to Replace the Battery

If your key fob is no longer locks or unlocks your car it may be time to replace the battery. The battery can be changed with a flathead screwdriver, plastic pry bar or other small tools. First look for the small slot where the backup/emergency ignition key made of metal be. Use the blade of your screwdriver or pry bar tool into this slot and gently open the back of the fob for the key. After you have opened the fob, you can locate and remove the CR 2032 3V battery. Put a brand new volvo key battery in its place and connect the fob.

Note: Certain older Volvo models have another type of battery that is called the CR2025. CR2025 batteries are 7 tenths of millimeters thinner than a CR2032 battery, and you will need to be cautious about the placement of your replacement.
